Port Everglades

Port Everglades

Regional Member represented by Jim Pyburn.

Caribbean cruise vacations and international trade are what makes Port Everglades an economic powerhouse and one of the most diverse seaports in the United States.

With its proximity to the Caribbean, Port Everglades is the third busiest cruise homeport in the world. It is a leading container port in Florida and among the most active cargo ports in the United States. Port Everglades is also South Florida’s main seaport for receiving petroleum products, including gasoline and jet fuel. A foreign-trade zone and available office space inside the Port make Port Everglades a highly desirable business center for world trade.

Additionally, the Florida East Coast Railway’s 43-acre international and domestic intermodal container transfer facility makes it possible for cargo shipped to Port Everglades to reach Atlanta and Charlotte within two days and 70 percent of the U.S. population in four days.

Port Everglades follows an aggressive, comprehensive Master/Vision Plan that is updated every 2-4 years to reanalyze and update market trends, changes in the cruise, cargo shipping and petroleum industries, local planning initiatives and evolving technology to strategize for upcoming capital improvements. During 2020, Port Everglades will unveil its most recent Master/Vision Plan Update, which will include a 5-year Master Plan for fiscal years 2019 to 2023, and Vision Plans for the next 10 and 20 years.

Port Everglades has $1.6 billion in infrastructure improvements planned in its intensive capital investment program.

Underway is a $471 million berth expansion, the largest infrastructure project in the Port’s history. The Southport Turning Notch Extension will add new cargo berths by lengthening the Port’s existing turn-around area from 900 feet to 2,400 feet.

Part of this effort includes installing crane rail infrastructure for new Super Post-Panamax gantry cranes. Three Super Post-Panamax container-handling gantry cranes are currently being manufactured and the Port has an option to purchase three additional cranes within five years.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is in the preconstruction engineering and design phase of deepening the Port’s navigation channels from 42 feet to 48-50 feet and widening narrower sections of the channel for safe vessel passage.

Nationally recognized commercial developer CenterPoint recently broke ground on a state-of-the-art international logistics center at Port Everglades that will replace the Port’s outdated foreign-trade zone facility.

These projects, once completed and fully functioning, will significantly increase cargo and cruise passenger numbers, and is anticipated to generate 7,000 direct jobs in Broward County and 135,000 jobs statewide.

Port of Miami

Regional Member represented by Eric Olafson

PortMiami, among the nation’s busiest ports, contributes approximately $43 billion and more than 334,000 jobs annually to the South Florida economy. Its sustained performance propels Miami to be recognized as a growing Global Gateway.

Mexico, with a population of 127 million, is a key market for expanded bi-lateral trade with PortMiami and the port seeks to be a major link for imports of Mexican produce and manufactured goods headed to Florida, the South Eastern US and beyond. The Mexico/PortMiami all-water route provides an ideal express highway for USMCA products, avoiding congestion, insecurity, and costly delays common at land border crossings.

PortMiami is committed to expanding our Mexico trade, which has a significant opportunity to grow now that the Florida East Coast railroad has been purchased by Grupo Mexico, the largest railroad in Mexico. This purchase will allow Grupo Mexico to promote among its existing corporate clients the all-water route for imports/exports to PortMiami as a gateway to the US market.

PortMiami has recently invested over $1 billion in infrastructure improvements to ensure its competitiveness in the international marketplace. These critical projects allow PortMiami to benefit from its strategic position in the region. Its on-dock rail and tunnel connection to the interstate highway system allows PortMiami cargo to reach 70% of US market within 1-4 days, providing Mexican products with a faster and more cost efficient route to the US consumer base. In addition, the world’s largest container shipping alliances have made PortMiami their preferred port – further solidifying its position as a world class global gateway.

PortMiami’s logistics community extends to include over 75 Foreign Trade Zones under PortMiami’s license (FTZ 281). It also has daily shuttle trains with intermodal service to container yards near the FTZs and the local warehouse district in Miami-Dade County.

The PortMiami team is continuously looking at ways to enhance its and is committed to continue offering optimum infrastructure combined with impeccable customer service, for expanding markets such as Mexico.
